URMC participates in family-based childhood obesity study
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) – UR Medicine’s Golisano Children’s Hospital, located in Rochester, NY has participated in one of the largest family-based childhood obesity studies ever conducted. This obesity study will help educate parents and children alike how to handle health, eating behaviors, and stress. Over 600 families with children ages 6-12 will be included in the study.
Dr. Stephen Cook, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UR’s Golisano Children’s Hospital and the lead researcher, said nearly 20% of kids in our area are obese or severely obese.
“Obesity is not as simple as a lifestyle choice,” Dr. Cook said. “It is a very complicated disease and such a stigmatized disease that families have a hard time acknowledging it.”
